Same trade, five prop accounts, five limits

There's no right number of prop accounts: run as many as you can track. A copier sends the same size to every account, but each one has its own drawdown left, daily limit and payout rules, so one $300 stop can leave four accounts fine and one nearly out.

One copied trade, five accounts

The trade: 2 MNQ with a 75-point stop. A micro Nasdaq point is $2, so 75 × $2 × 2 = $300 at risk on every account, and $1,500 on one idea across all five.

Example dataDrawdown roomAfter 1 stopAfter 2 stops
Account 1$1,900$1,600$1,300
Account 2$1,650$1,350$1,050
Account 3$1,400$1,100$800
Account 4$480$180−$120 · hit
Account 5$1,750$1,450$1,150

Account 4 had $480 of room. One stop leaves $180, less than one more full stop; two stops cost $600, so its drawdown is hit while the other four still have $800 or more.

Five questions before you add an account

For every account you run, can you answer these right now, without logging in to anything?

  1. How much drawdown is left?
  2. How much of today's loss limit is used?
  3. Where is my consistency number?
  4. Is copying allowed on this account?
  5. Does my firm count my household?

If you can answer all five for three accounts but not for a fourth, your number is three for now. Rules differ by firm and change often, so write down the date you checked each one. The prop firm rules cheat sheet shows a checked-on date for every firm.

How TJ tracks every account

  • Prop guard per account: pick your firm's preset, check each value against your firm's current terms, and each account shows its own daily loss and drawdown meters, with a warning at 80%.
  • CSV import from Tradovate, NinjaTrader, Rithmic, TopstepX or any platform, into the account the fills came from. See how to import your trades.
  • Stats by account, or all accounts together, so you can see which one is drifting.

Questions

How many prop firm accounts can you have?

It depends on the firm. Some cap funded accounts held at the same time, some cap evaluations separately or not at all, and some count per household instead of per person. Check the cap on your firm's own help page and note the date you checked.

How many prop accounts should you run?

There's no right number. A practical test: for every account, can you say right now how much drawdown is left, how much of today's loss limit is used, where your consistency number is, whether copying is allowed on it, and whether your firm counts your household? Run as many as you can answer those for.

Is copy trading allowed between prop firm accounts?

It varies. Some firms allow copying your own trades across your own accounts, some limit it to certain account types, and copying someone else or trading as a group is almost always not allowed. Some firms also prohibit opposite positions across accounts, even by accident. Check your firm's terms.

Why does the same trade put one account in trouble?

Because each account has its own room left. A copier sends the same size everywhere; in the example, a $300 stop leaves four accounts with $1,100 or more and one with $180, less than one more stop.
